THE Limpopo teenager who waited two years to go to a tertiary institution is one step closer to achieving her dream.

Portia Makamu, 19, received statement of her symbols from the Department of Education yesterday, ensuring that she can finally apply to study diagnostic radiography as she always wanted to.

"I feel like my results are being released all over again. I'm so excited," Makamu said.

"I can see that the doors are going to open for me."

Makamu waited two years to go to a tertiary institution and was facing another year of sitting at home if something was not done.

Her troubles began in 2008 when she first applied for her identity document at Home Affairs.

She was told that someone had changed the date of her birth on her application and the process to rectify it took two years to complete.

Makamu was forced to write her matric exams in Limpopo in 2010 using her birth certificate.

Since then she has been sent from pillar to post until yesterday when she was issued with the statement that corresponded with her ID.

"My parents are so excited. They want to see me studying," she said.

"I'm the only one who will be going for tertiary study in my family," she said.

"I don't want to see myself sitting [idle]. I want to see myself studying and working hard." .

Makamu thanked Sowetan for the dedication it put into helping her get her Senior Certificate.

"In every step of my success I will always remember Sowetan for what it did for me. Thank you very much."

Tshepo Seema of the national Department of Education said Makamu's Senior Certificate would be sent to education quality assurer Umalusi tomorrow and she would be notified of its arrival as soon as possible. -nkosin@sowetan.co.za
