Road safety programme yielding positive results

THE government has vowed to intensify efforts to rid the roads of delinquent drivers and unroadworthy vehicles.

The Department of Transport says its million-a-month vehicle check announced by Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele on October 1 2010 is yielding positive results and has so far netted over 24000 motorists.

This campaign, combined with the department's New National Rolling Enforcement Plan (NREP), has seen 24703 drivers arrested between January and April.

This includes 7017 for drunk driving, 378 for reckless and/or negligent driving, 908 for excessive speed, 391 for overloading, 12975 for outstanding warrants of arrest, 446 for not being in possession of valid public transport permits, 279 for false documentation, 208 for not being in possession of valid driving licences and 2101 for various other offences.

During the same period, 4067297 vehicles and drivers were checked, 1457516 fines issued and 17343 unroadworthy vehicles taken off the road.

Ndebele said: "We call upon all law-abiding road users to continue to conduct themselves in a manner that says: 'I'm responsible. Road Safety is my responsibility.'

"We encourage them to be ambassadors for road safety and play their part wherever they find themselves in making our roads safer."

The United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 was launched in May last year. The campaign aims to reduce road deaths around the world by 50% by 2020.

"Enlist as a friend of the Decade of Action. Together, we can put an end to deaths and injuries on our roads," said Ndebele. - moengk@sowetan.co.za
