'Thugs stole ANC' - Hani daughter

THE eldest daughter of slain South African Communist Party leader Chris Hani has launched a scathing attack on the ANC, saying the party has been hijacked by unscrupulous and corrupt thugs.

Speaking exactly 19 years after her father was murdered, Cleopatra Hani likened her father to Moses and Black Consciousness Movement founder Steve Biko.

Had her father been alive today, South Africa would be a different country, she said.

“The problem with this country is the corruption that we need to move away from.

“The ANC has been stolen from the people by thugs, and the real people of the ANC are those on the streets with nothing.  There are .. puppets in the ANC whom I have no ear to listen to.

“If my father were still alive, he would not be happy with this state of affairs,” said Hani.

She was in East London remembering the day her father, a former chief of staff of Umkhonto weSizwe,  was assassinated outside their Boksburg home on April 10, 1993.  Cleopatra said she felt nothing for killers Janusz Walus and Clive Derby-Lewis.

“My father was a man of action. He was  loving, caring and he was revolutionary. If  my father were still alive, things would have  been different, very different,” she said.

“I am not ashamed of what I am saying. What happened in Polokwane was wrong  because we look stupid. Today we want  [President Jacob] Zuma then the next day  we do not want Zuma. We love the ANC but  the problem is greed for power, money and  positions,” she said referring to the watershed elective conference that saw Zuma wrestle power from his predecessor Thabo Mbeki in 2007.

ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane said the ANC would not defend  itself from Hani’s assertions.
