Children stung by bees in Tembisa

A swarm of bees stung 48 children, ages two to seven, at a school in Commercia, Tembisa, paramedics said.

"They were playing in the playground and apparently there was an active beehive in the area which was disturbed," said ER24 spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson.

She said 45 children were taken to hospital by teachers and paramedics after being stung at 8.30am.

"In the last month and a half, ER24 has responded to approximately six incidents of bee attacks in the Johannesburg area," said Jackson.

She advised anyone attacked by bees to move as far away from the hive as possible, to get indoors and ensure their mouths and nostrils were not exposed.

If they were allergic to bee stings, they should take extreme care and should seek immediate medical attention if they were stung, Jackson said.
