Clampdown over bogus licences

THE Limpopo department of roads and transport has cancelled 1183 bogus driving licences and suspended 61 traffic examiners since April last year.

The department said yesterday the cancellations and suspensions come after a special investigating unit probe found that certain traffic officers and driving school owners were involved in corrupt activities in the issuing of licences.

According to the department the probe revealed calculation errors, that no eye testing had been done on some of the applicants, that road and yard test times were less than what is required, that there were administrative errors such as application forms not being fully completed.

It also found that test reports were signed by examiners who did not conduct the tests.

The affected testing stations were identified as Sekgosese, Marble Hall, Lephalale, Mokopane, Tzaneen, Blouberg, Phalaborwa, Makhado, Polokwane and Bochum.

Departmental spokesperson Thesan Moodley said they were investigating testing stations in the five districts of the province and that two of Capricorn district's testing stations were being probed.
