Man dies after fall into Duzi

A MAN drowned after falling into the Duzi River in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, yesterday, paramedics said.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said a local fisherman noticed the man hanging onto trees in the river, calling for help.

The fisherman ran to a nearby home and called the emergency services but when he returned the man was missing. Botha said police divers entered the river and started searching the area where the man was last seen.

"After about 15 minutes divers retrieved the body. Tragically he was declared dead on the scene by the Netcare 911 advanced life support paramedic."

Reports from the scene indicated the man could have slipped down a steep embankment behind Newton School.
