Poll station gutted

A LIMPOPO school meant to be a polling station was burnt down yesterday, hours before voting took place

Ngoanangoato Secondary School at Ranto village in the Sekhukhune area was to be used as a voting station, b ut on Tuesday night a group of pupils allegedly went on the rampage and burnt down the school's library.

The angry pupils allegedly accused the principal of introducing new disciplinary measures which they were not happy with, including wearing school uniforms.

To register their frustration, the pupils allegedly burnt down the library before locking the school gate and barricading the road leading to the school.

Police were called in to calm the situation and moved the voting station to the local tribal authority offices.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said they had deployed members from the public order policing unit to monitor the situation.

He said the election ran smoothly at the new voting station.

"We believe the idea was for the pupils to disturb the election so that the principal could consider their concerns," said Mulaudzi.

He said damage to the library was estimated at around R100,000, but no one had been arrested by the time of going to press yesterday.
