Joburg's ANC heavyweights exude confidence

JOHANNESBURG ANC mayoral candidate Parks Tau said he was ready for the challenge that lay ahead when he cast his vote in Winchester Hills yesterday

Tau voted at Randeo Special School accompanied by Gauteng ANC chairperson Paul Mashatile, outgoing Johannesburg executive mayor Amos Masondo and Rehana Moosajee, a member of the mayoral committee for transport in the City of Joburg

"The next few days will be about waiting for the results, and starting to prepare for the next five years and I think it will be a long challenging period for all of us.

"It is a difficult ward. But I am confident because the branch did an assessment of the work that was done and the report given to me this morning is very confident," said Tau.

Meanwhile, Masondo said it was emotional to vote for the last time as mayor of Joburg.

"You must remember that elections did not come easy in this country,' he said. "I was excited reflecting on all the good work we have done."

Mfaniseni Dansa, 61, of Yeoville, said: "l voted so that our people can come out of their misery. We want businesses to be theirs and the streets to be clean."

In Betrams, near Elis Park Stadium, twin sisters Juliet and Julia Sibeko, 28, were also hoping for change.

"The conditions in our flats are not improving while the rent is escalating," Juliet said..

Joubert Park, Johannesburg, was the country's biggest voting station, with five marquees erected in the park.

Unemployed Matshidiso Sebopa, 28, said she voted for a party that would create jobs and provide housing.
