Buthelezi promises to be strict

IFP LEADER Mangosuthu Buthelezi has vowed to hold councilors accountable and to fire those who fail to deliver.

Buthelezi was addressing thousands of party members during the launch of the 2011 local government election campaign in Lindelani, north of Durban, on Saturday.

"Together, you and I will hold IFP councilors accountable for their actions. I will insist on the highest standards of good governance, ethical behaviour and responsiveness to the community. We will strictly enforce this and fire those who fail to comply.

"We will ensure that our councilors are always available and accountable to you," he said.

He said for the past 17 years South Africa's democratic values have been tested often.

"I wish I could say we are at a point where commitment to liberty, good governance and development is beyond reproach. But I feel we have come to a crossroads on what might still be a long journey," he said.
