The lecturer at the centre of the "insulting remarks" debacle at North West University has resigned, the institution said on Friday.

Professor Allister Butler had stepped down, but would contractually be in the university's employ until May 1, spokesperson Koos Degenaar said.

Students in the human and social sciences faculty alleged that Butler had made "insulting remarks" to the effect that he did not have sex with their mothers, after they complained about being unable to afford books.

Butler was suspended pending an investigation into the matter, but had since submitted his resignation. He took a month of sick leave, meaning he was expected to return briefly to the campus in mid-April.

Degenaar said Butler had apologised to the students.

Butler could not be reached for comment.
