R57million for flood victims

ABOUT R57million will be spent on help for communities affected by the recent floods, the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform said yesterday.

The initiative will begin on Monday, when officials visit the Amajuba district of KwaZulu-Natal, and end on April 26 in Gauteng's Sedibeng area, department spokesperson Mtobeli Mxotwa said in a statement.

The project would cover indigent households, the unemployed, child-headed homes, pensioners and disabled people.

He said the project would, in the short term, provide 800 temporary shelters to disaster-stricken communities in eight provinces.

Households in these provinces would also be given 800 lightning conductors, 800 solar lights, 800 solar radios and 800 oil lamps.

About 30 people were killed in lightning strikes and floods in KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape recently.
