Drug kingpin nabbed after flouting parole

A 72-year-old convicted drug kingpin was arrested on the border between South Africa and Swaziland on Friday after flouting his parole conditions

Correctional services said Bra Solly Motsepe absconded last year and was believed to be behind the fraudulent 'cleaning of his records' at the department.

It said in a statement members of the Hawks police unit arrested  him at the Oshoek border post on Thursday as he was trying to enter  South Africa.

“He was fetched by the Hawks on Friday on the basis of a warrant  of arrest issued by the department of correctional services for skipping and flouting his parole conditions,” the department said.

“Parolee Motsepe will be detained in a correctional centre as he  is expected to complete the remaining years of his sentence that ends in 2017 behind bars.”

Motsepe was expected to also face charges of fraud and corruption relating to the wiping-off of his records from Correctional Services by an IT official.

This official, Gregory Mohapi Malebo, was suspended in November last year, arrested, charged and granted a R3000 bail.

He was to appear again on March 11, the department said.

It said Motsepe was a convicted multi-millionaire drug kingpin, who was arrested in the 1990s after the discovery of mandrax tablets with a street value of more than R20 million.
