Gran 'orchestrated' actor rape claim

TEXT messages sent to the family of a prominent television actor accused of raping his four-year-old daughter led to the delay of his bail hearing yesterday.

Wynberg magistrate's court prosecutor Ayanda Bakana said: "The mother of the victim allegedly sent SMSes to the family of the accused.

"The SMSes allege that the grandmother (who opened the case) orchestrated the whole thing."

Bakana asked for a postponement, stating that the child was taken to a hospital on the day the alleged rape happened.

He said that seven days later, the girl was taken to a private doctor for assessment.

Bakana said he did not yet have the doctors' reports.

The actor allegedly raped his daughter at a hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Christmas Day.

Police said at the time that the man, 40, raped his daughter while the mother was not in the hotel room where she, the man and their two children had booked in.

The man allegedly left the hotel immediately after the mother returned.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his daughter, was arrested in Germiston on January 2.

This was after the child's grandmother opened a case of rape at Katlehong police station inEkurhuleni.

The matter was later transferred to Sandton where the actor was detained and charged.

"It is important that the court sees the SMSes.

"I will then decide on whether to oppose bail or not," prosecutor Bakana said.

The actor's attorney, David Morwerane, asked to speak to his client, who stood calmly in the dock during proceedings.

"I have spoken to my client and have explained to him that it is important that the matter be postponed today.

"He has no objections," Morwerane told the court.

Magistrate Gideon Schnetler postponed the matter to today for a final bail hearing.
