Minister supports fire victims

TRADE and Industry Minister Rob Davies yesterday handed out blankets and food parcels to families whose shacks were destroyed by fire at Masiphumelele township outside Fish Hoek in Cape Town last week.

Davies, who visited the township in November for an entrepreneurship programme, returned to the township to "show his support" to those affected by the fires, his spokesperson Bongani Lukhele said.

"He felt it was important for him to show his support to the people."

At least 160 homes were gutted and more than 600 people were left homeless by the fire.

Fifteen fire engines and a helicopter were used to battle the blaze.

The displaced people have been accommodated at the Masiphumelele Community Hall.
