Patients moved for operations

THE cooling system at the Tembisa Hospital has been faulty for three months and as a result 29 patients have had to be transferred to other hospitals for operations.

The cooling system has affected non-ergency operations.

Gauteng health spokesperson Simon Zwane said: "The problem has been going on for three months. They have been trying to fix it but there has been problems with the compressor.

"When the people who are repairing it indicated that it would take longer than expected to fix we decided to move the patients to other hospitals."

Health MEC Ntombi Mekgwe visited the hospital on Friday to determine what was being done to repair the cooling system.

On discovering that repair work would take a week or two she instructed the department to transfer non-emergency patients to other hospitals.

"The process started when a patient with neck injuries was airlifted to Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Four other patients were transferred by ambulance," Zwane said.

Other patients were transferred to Steve Biko Hospital in Pretoria.

Zwane said: "We transferred them to other hospitals because we did not want to have backlogs when the cooling system has been fixed. We will probably have a backlog of two to four weeks."
