SECURITY measures must be reviewed in KwaZulu-Natal hospitals after an off-duty policeman opened fire at another officer in a hospital, the DA said yesterday.
John Steenhuisen, the DA spokesperson for health, said medical personnel at Addington Hospital ran for cover after an off-duty policeman opened fire at another officer before killing himself.
Steenhuisen called for the development of a policy to deal with firearms in hospitals.
Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge said on Sunday the off-duty policeman had a disagreement with a bouncer at a club in Durban.
The bouncer wanted to kick the off-duty policeman out of the club. He refused and went to his car and came back with a firearm.
"Police arrived at the scene and confiscated the officer's firearm and he was taken to hospital to draw blood for an alcohol test."
At the hospital he appeared to have grabbed another officer's firearm and the shooting took place.
Steenhuisen said hospitals should be safe environments and access to firearms must be curtailed unless there are exceptional circumstances.
"Health workers must be able to get on with the task of healing the sick without fear for their own safety."
