Anger over police escort

TENSIONS are raging within the ANC in Ekurhuleni, with some party members accusing the provincial leadership of imposing its decisions on branches

On Monday the ANC provincial leadership was accompanied by a huge contingent of police officers when it went into the area to confirm its decision to disband the Ekurhuleni regional executive committee (REC) and the formation of an interim committee led by Zeni Tshongweni.

ANC members, who spoke to Sowetan yesterday on condition of anonymity, accused the PEC of intimidating them to accept their decision to disband the REC.

They questioned the PEC's decision to bring a large number of police to the meeting held in Germiston, where members also had to produce their IDs before being allowed into the venue.

"The PEC came with a huge police escort that patrolled inside and outside the venue," an informant said.

"Since when are police part of internal meetings of the ANC?"
