Cops held for R525,000 theft

FOUR people, including two police officers, will appear in the Polokwane magistrate's court today on charges of theft, corruption, fraud and money laundering.

A lieutenant-colonel, 44, and a constable, 30, allegedly looted money from a police safe at Polokwane police station.

It is alleged they stole the money from the police safe after it was confiscated from suspected foreign exchange dealer Feizel Mohammed during his arrest.

Police said the suspects stole R525,000 that was part of R4,1 million that was confiscated from Mohammed and shared it among themselves and relatives.

Limpopo police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said the two police officers, a the clerk and a schoolteacher were arrested after investigations by The Hawks.

The two police officers were disarmed when they reported for duty on Friday evening and fellow men in blue informed them about their arrests.

Police said the R4,1 million was being counted at Polokwane police station under the supervision of a lieutenant colonel who is a member of tactical response team when it went missing.

Police said Mohammed was arrested on August 4 for violating the Currency and Exchange Act and the Income Tax Act.

"The house of one of the suspects was searched and about R127,000 cash and $3,800 was found hidden in a shallow grave in the yard and some in the house," said Ramatseba said.

Police said preliminary investigations also revealed that some of the stolen money was given to family members, friends and other people.

The suspect's colleague, a police constable, was also arrested and charged with theft and corruption. He was allegedly offered R75,000 cash by the suspect.

"An amount of R50,000 cash was found hidden at his parents' home at GaMothapo in Mankweng," said Ramatseba.

The other R25,000 was used to buy clothes and entertaining friends.

Police also said two more people were arrested - a police clerk attached to the Mahwelereng SAPS Emergency Centre and a teacher who is a brother to the constable - for receiving money suspected to have been stolen.

"There is a possibility that the two police officers will be suspended," Ramatseba said.
