Taxis might join public service strike

Commuters could soon find themselves without transport as taxis threaten to strike in solidarity with public service workers.

The ongoing strike by members of the public sector has brought many state departments and facilities to a standstill.

Rumours have been circulating that KwaZulu-Natal taxis might stop operations in a show of solidarity with striking public sector workers. But KwaZulu-Natal Transport Alliance president George Ferror dismissed the rumours.

"What our members said when they attended a meeting by government employees on Monday was that if the government refuses to give in on worker's demands, we will join them in a show of solidarity. But no decision has been taken as yet." Ferror said.

He said he would meet his management later yesterday to discuss the matter further, but insisted that taxis would be operating.
