Maile and Kupa to fight it out for Gauteng leadership

THABO Kupa and Lebogang Maile have emerged as the main contenders for the Gauteng chairmanship of the ANC Youth League.

And unlike in other provinces where infighting in the ANCYL has burst into the public domain at provincial conferences, provincial secretary Kupa expects the gathering to proceed smoothly.

The provincial conference is to be held in Boksburg from tomorrow until Sunday.

"We met with delegates from all regions and we all committed ourselves to conduct the conference in a disciplined way. Our delegates are mature and we do not expect anarchy," said Kupa.

He said the ANC provincial leadership would be present to give guidance. "We have appointed an electoral committee to make sure that everything runs smoothly ," he said.

ANCYL provincial treasurer Bandile Masuku is also said to be in the running for the position.

Some ANCYL insiders have revealed that Masuku could be presented as an alternative to Kupa, who could withdraw from the contest and retain his position as secretary.

Masuku, who is a medical doctor, rose through the ranks of Cosas with Maile in the late 1990s.

Masuku's popularity in students politics led him to be elected president of SA Student Congress and president of the SRC at Medunsa.

Other sources say Maile, who is also a member of the Gauteng provincial legislature, has an advantage over Kupa. But Kupa is said to enjoy the backing of the ANCYL national leadership.

He was among those who supported Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane's attempt to wrestle power from Paul Mashatile during the ANC provincial conference recently.

Maile is perceived to be aligned to the Mashatile faction.
