11 ZCC members die in bus crash

AT LEAST 11 people were killed when the bus they were travelling plunged 40 metres down an embankment on the Georges Valley Road outside Tzaneen on Sunday night.

The accident happened at about 8pm the driver lost control of the bus.

Ten people were seriously injured, while 36 escaped with slight injuries and 46 were taken to the Mankweng and Letaba hospitals for treatment.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said the bus was coming from Moria, ferrying members of the ZCC church to Leboeng village near Ohrigstad, when the accident happened.

Ramatseba said the bus rolled several times down the embankment after the driver lost control.

He said the driver escaped with slight injuries.

By 10am yesterday the road was still closed to traffic since the wreckage was still being pulled from the embankment.

Motorists were advised to use the Makgobaskloof road as an alternative route.

Limpopo MEC for roads and transport Pinkie Kekana yesterday sent her condolences to the families of the deceased.

She said the accident happened at a time when traffic safety initiatives were starting to bear fruit.

"Our hearts and minds are with the bereaved families during this time of grief.

"They must rest assured that the department will do everything in its power to uncover the cause and the perpetrators will be dealt with in a very serious manner," Kekana said.

Meanwhile, four passengers were killed and nine others escaped with injuries when a tyre of a minibus taxi they were travelling in burst, causing the driver to lose control.

The accident happened in the Roodekuil area of the Belabela municipality on Sunday afternoon.

The driver of the minibus taxi was not injured.
