THE life of gospel star Solly Moholo, whose real name is Solomon Molokoane, was spared by four gunmen in a hostage drama on Friday night because they loved his music.
Molokoane spoke to Sowetan yesterday at the Jozi FM Gospel Festival held at Safa Centre in Soweto, where more than 20000 fans joined him in thanking God for his miraculous escape.
Molokoane explained how four men held discussions at his studio-house in Soshanguve to decide whether he should live or die.
"When I could not show them the safe, they got angry and said I should be killed. But one of them said he loved my music so they should spare my life," Molokoane said.
"The one who loved my music told the other three that they also loved my music so there was no need for me to be killed - and they agreed."
He said on Friday at about 10.30pm he had just finished working on a music piece with two friends and fell asleep on a sofa - only to be woken by a man holding a firearm.
"The gunman demanded money. Just as I was trying to comprehend the situation, one of my friends came from outside, with two other men carrying guns."
Molokoane said he could hear more voices in the yard.
"They searched us and took cash and cellphones. The thugs used belts to tie us up and then dragged us to the toilet and left us there. But later they returned, demanding keys to the safe.
"Then my friend tried to open the control room but he was in such a panic he could not open it. One of the guys hit me with a bottle of beer. I thought it was a bullet and I was about to die.
"The thugs also took a TV set, home theatre system, clothes and fled in my friend's BMW 3 Series which was found near Mabopane on Saturday.
"After they were gone we called my neighbours, who alerted the police and the paramedics."
