Bonhams art auctioneers will sell a piece of music recorded by late South African painter Gerard Sekoto while he was struggling to make a living as an exile in Paris.

The rare piece of music would be sold alongside several of his paintings at Bonhams' next South African art auction which takes place on February 17 and February 18, it said.

"The record is estimated to sell at between R5500 to R8500 but I have never seen anything like it, so who knows what it might make," said Giles Peppiatt, the head of South African Art at Bonhams.

The record is titled Chantes Par Gerard Sekoto and contains the songs Heav'n Heav'n , Sing Low , Were you there and Ev'ry time I feel the spirit .

Sekoto, who died aged 80 in 1993, spent most of his adult life in exile in Paris.

Besides the piece of music, 12 of his paintings would also be sold at the auction in February. - Sapa
