30 000 fans expected at Ajax-Downs final
The Premier Soccer League's safety and security officer Mfanano Majola expects at worst 30 000 supporters to watch the Absa Cup final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town.
The Castle Premiership champions and Telkom Knockout finalists meet in a final that will bring the curtain down on the current season at Durban's King's Park Rugby Stadium on Saturday (8.10pm).
Majola said there would be a full security deployment befitting an A-category game.
"The South African Police Service will be out in full force and so will be the Durban metro police, the PSL, Sundowns and the Ajax security personnel," he revealed.
The cup sponsors have already bought 10000 tickets, which will be distributed equally between the two Durban townships of Umlazi and KwaMashu.
"There will be five free trains from each township to Durban station on match day. All the fans need is to produce a match ticket to board," Majola said.
Sundowns have made arrangements for 150 buses to ferry supporters to Durban, which assures a further 10000 attendance.
"There have been roadshows around Durban to sell the final and that plus complimentary tickets should guarantee us no less than 30 000," Majola confidently predicted.
A KwaZulu-Natal Invitation team organised by Ray Xulu and Fani Madida will take on Sundowns Masters to complement a programme featuring musical acts such as Phuzekhemisi, Chomee and Professor.
Sundowns leave for the coast sometime tomorrow while Ajax will only land in Durban tomorrow at 6pm.
The Sundowns squad arrived in Johannesburg at 9.15am yesterday after what their marketing and public relations executive director Alex Shakoane called "a long and tiring journey" from Tunisia after a Confederation Cup clash.
The squad was given a break yesterday and earnest preparation for the final begins at Chloorkop this morning.
Meanwhile, things are beginning to shape up for the Brazilians with newly crowned Player of the Season Godfrey Sapula recovered from a bout of flu, according to Shakoane.
"Surprise Moriri and Jose Torrealba also went through a light training session. I am positive they will be ready before Saturday," Shakoane said.
