Philly's Games prize money a whopping R50 000 for winners

The winners of Philly's Games, a festive season soccer tournament that is staged around Tembisa, in Ekurhuleni, will this year pocket R50 000.

The first prize has been increased by 100 percent after last year's champions took home R25 000.

The increase was confirmed by the event's communications director, Bheki Zondo.

Zondo said 10 clubs out of the targeted 24 have already confirmed their participation in the event that will be held from December 16 to 30.

The former Tembisa Classic spokesman said the opening match and the final will be played at Mehlareng Stadium.

Other matches will be played at various sports grounds in the township.

Holders Columbians of Tembisa, who have won the event for three consecutive years, are among the clubs that have confirmed they will take part.

The Talibans also of Tembisa, Cheese of Alexandra and Soweto's Real Amadrinkers are among the exciting teams who have confirmed their availability for the popular 15-day showpiece.

Amadrinkers are owned by popular kwaito star, Mandla Spikiri.

"We urge clubs to start registering now because the December 1 registration deadline is around the corner. Each team is expected to pay R2 000 registration fee.

"We anticipate two weeks of enthralling football as has been the case in the past. People of Tembisa and surrounding areas are already talking about this tournament and we expect good crowds at the matches," added the motormouth Zondo.

The champions will receive a floating trophy, gold medals and a set of jerseys that will also be given to the runners-up and the other two semifinalists.

The runners-up will get R20 000 and silver medals and the third finishers will collect R10 000 and bronze medals. Those who finish fourth will pocket R5 000.
