Basetsana Kumalo, the new board member of Joint Aid Management (JAM), hosted a glittering winter ball at Avianto near Krugersdorp on Thursday night.

The gala dinner attended and addressed by Qedani Mahlangu, Gauteng MEC for health, raised funds for the charity organisation feeding children throughout South Africa.

The high-powered businesswoman, resplendent in a dramatic red Gert Johan Coetzee gown, said JAM raised and educated the late Simba Mhere, one of her Top Billing presenters. Mhere died in a car accident in January.

His parents who attended the dinner, worked there as missionaries, and Mhere went to live there as a two-year-old from Zimbabwe. He only left the mission house in 2013 when he had saved enough money to buy his family a home.

Kumalo said Mhere's untimely death devastated all those who new and loved him.

"I have agreed to serve on their board and help with the work of JAM in honour of my boy," she shared.

Soweto Opera Quadro and Lloyd Cele serenaded the guests, who feasted on a three-course meal.
