THE family of seasoned television actor Ronald Mqwebu has expressed dismay following rumours on social media networks that he is dead.

Mqwebu, 76, was admitted at eThekwini Hospital, in Durban, four weeks ago after an attack of various ailments, including kidney failure and stomach problems.

Mqwebu became famous for portraying the character James Mkhize in the SABC1 sitcom, Emzini Wenzintsizwa, acting alongside Vusi Thanda, Jabu Nkosi, Shadrack Ngema, and Jerry Phele.

According to the family, Mqwebu was responding well to treatment after he was rushed to the hospital's intensive care unit last week.

They said the veteran actor's condition has improved tremendously.

On Monday, Twitter was flooded with comments that Mqwebu had died. His daughter, Slindile Mqwebu, a content producer at Ukhozi FM said the rumours dismayed the family.

She said the rumours came at a time when the family was beginning to feel a sense of relief that her father was recovering.

"My father has regained consciousness, he is able to talk. He is even breathing on his own.

"As a family, we are relieved because it [his health condition] has been serious. We have been praying hard, we are glad that he is doing much better."

Mqwebu was diagnosed with a kidney problem at the age of 65 and has been on a strict diet.

Slindile said she suspected that people misinterpreted a Sunday World story this past weekend which reported that the actor was fighting for his life in hospital.

"We know that there are those who are heartless, who will joke about death on social networks. What makes us happy is that he is getting better," she said.

On social media network Twitter, a Mr Carling Black Lab posted the following: "RIP Khabazela".

Lennox Ralebona retweeted: "Breaking Rumour, Ronald Mqwebu of Emzini Wezinsizwa passed away. He was well-known as Baba'Mkhize (Khabazela)."

Slindile also wrote: "Mhlola ka James Mkhize? Wait... Wait... Ronald Mqwebu also passed away??????"

Slindile is the producer of Nethezeka, a show presented by Mroza Buthelezi and Chilli M between noon and 3pm on Monday to Friday.
