Idols contestants put on splendid show

AT the packed newly built Soweto Theatre in Jabulani contestants pulled out all the stops to get the support of the voting public.

The top 18 contestants gave incredible individual performances.

With the stakes extremely high, contestants shifted into top gear for a place in the coveted yet elusive top 10 spot in SA Idols Season 8.

The four males and four females with the least number of votes will be eliminated from the contest next Sunday.

There were elements of brilliance and then moments that were not so good, with some contestants placing themselves well within reach of the final 10.

Simphiwe Gwegwe of Port Nolloth, Kimberley, could not contain his tears after setting the tone for the evening. Singing Sarah McLachlan's Angel with such emotive presence brought tears to Idols judge Unathi Msengana.

Following in his footsteps was Monde Msuthwana with an R Kelly's When a woman loves rendition. He looked the part with good song choice and brilliant rendition that brought the best out of him.

Still reeling from a dramatic exit in Sun City during the theatre phase last year, Tshidi Tenyane gave a great performance with a Jennifer Hudson blockbuster rendition, And I am telling you from Dreamgirls.

Maryke Buffel improves with every performance.

With pressure quickly mounting for 25-year-old Khaya Mthethwa, the most talked about contestant held his own. As expected, he performed well when he belted I ain't got you by Alicia Keys.

Thabisa Mhlakulwana of Cape Town has not recovered after a torrid time in Sun City. She has a lot of catching up to do against the vocal prowess of fellow contestants. Credible vocalists have been sacrificed in the process in her favour.

Jean Jean Huisman of Stellenbosch let himself down with a sub-standard performance, not connecting with the song. He is in danger of being eliminated.

Voting period is 24 hours with lines for male contestants having closed yesterday and female lines closing today at 5.30pm.

The results will be made public next Sunday during a live show from the Soweto Theatre with performances by Zahara.
