Upside-down rainbows

DO you know that there is such a thing as an upside-down rainbow?

It is quite unusual and is caused by sunlight shining through a thin, visible screen of tiny ice crystals high up in the sky.

Some people call them smile rainbows.

Another unusual phenomenon is a fire rainbow.

They occur in thin, wispy cirrus clouds that are at a height of 6000m with the sun at 58º.

The amount of ice crystals in the clouds also need to be just right.

This spectacular event lasts for a very short time and only when all the factors are absolutely right. - weatherwizkids.com; weather-facts.com; interestingfacts.org
