Teens - Celebs show the way

CELEBRITIES are so concerned about teenage pregnancy, rape and substance abuse among schoolchildren that they have decided to do something about these problems.

Nthato Mashishi, Zama Ncgobo , Siphiwe Mtshali, Lerato Kganyago, Tina Mkwaiwa II, Kwela Tebza, Vukani Khoza and Lerato Moloi have initiated a programme to visit schools and give motivational talks to pupils.

The programme includes offering advice and help with the matric dance by providing clothes and make-up. They will also help with career guidance and on matters pertaining to relationships and health.

The first session took place last week at Namedi High School in Diepkloof in Soweto and the artists intend visiting 50 schools by the end of this year.

Make-up artist Mashishi says the initiative is very close to his heart.

"When I was younger I was looking for someone to instil hope and light in my life, but there was no one. Now I want to help other young people," Mashishi says.

"We want to motivate the youth because most of us came from the same background. Most of us came from broken homes and have experienced the same challenges as these youngsters so we want to share our personal stories with them," he says.

Singer Koyo Bala says he is glad to be making a positive contribution.

"When the programme first started, I took it lightly, but when I was standing in front of the children, telling them that nothing is impossible, I could see that I was motivating them,"he says.

Bala, who dropped out of tertiary, adds: "I don't want them to drop out like me. I want them to become better leaders."

Singer and choreographer Vukani Khoza says: "I'm doing this out of love. We are trying to make young people aware that celebrity life is not always glamorous and that education is important."

The artists say they are talking to the education department to come on board. Other corporations are interested in the programme too, they say.
