ANCYL marches to demand answers for killings

THE continued killing of businesspeople in and around Seshego in Polokwane, Limpopo, has prompted a province-wide march to demand reasons for the killings - if they are not politically motivated.

Three businesspeople have been killed in their homes in the last two months.

Pitsi Mabina, 71, owner of the Rosemary Spaza Shop in Seshego's Zone 4 section, was attacked at his home on July 5. It is not known how many assailants were involved, but Mabina's friend who went to check on him the following day found him writhing in pain. He died later in hospital.

Police opened an attempted murder case, but later changed it to murder. No arrests have been made.

On July 22 Selaelo Mothemela, 36, a restaurant owner in Blood River, was shot dead at his tavern in Mmotong village. He was discovered by police on patrol.

Sello Tiger Maleka, 51, the father of ANC Youth League's Peter Mokaba regional secretary Eddie Maleka, was killed at his home on August 18. Maleka owned several business establishments in Seshego township.

Angry ANC Youth League members have organised a march to ask the police to investigate whether the killings were politically motivated. They have invited the league's national treasurer, Pule Mabe, to be part of the march.

The marchers seek to establish whether people's lives were safe in those areas and whether the killings were perhaps witchcraft-related.

Mabe confirmed yesterday he would participate in the march sometime next week.

"It is true that I will participate in such an initiative, inspired by one reason - that it is only when people work together that situations would be stabilised," Mabe said.

He said he would participate as a way of supporting Maleka.

"We feel that as comrades and members we should continue to support and stand together, especially when our people fall victim to such incidents. The ANC and all its structures are best placed to provide leadership and direction on resolving such problems," he said.

Warrant officer Mothemane Malefo said investigations were continuing.
