Breaking stereotype about rich

TYCOON: Nigerian Aliko Dangote
TYCOON: Nigerian Aliko Dangote

MONDAY'S MTVMeets ... with MTN, was a well-deserved ego trip for all those patriotic Africans who have not given up on this continent.

A bunch of young bright minds asked questions that determined and ambitious wannabe tycoons would want to know to make it in the cutthroat world of business.

The youngsters were Nigerian investment banker and MBA student JG Ayodele; Zimbabwean born and US-based Public Administration Master's student Farayi Chipungu; photographer Yomi Black of Lagos and Liberian singer Jerrilyn.

Breaking the stereotype that mega billionaires are only found in Western countries or that they are usually fat and healthy, he came across as a fit, laid-back yet clear individual, whose life has always been characterised by road maps.

Nigerian Aliko Dangote, 54, breaks the stereotype that the richest people come mostly from Western communities.

According to Forbes magazine the self-made billionaire is not only the richest man in Africa but the 51st richest person in the world.

His net worth is said to be $13,8billion (about R98billion).

Starting from relatively humble beginnings in 1977 Dangote has, thanks to a loan from his wealthy uncle, built one of Africa's largest conglomerates, employing more than 12000 people. While cement remains the most prized jewel in his crown, Dangote's sphere of influence now spans sugar, oil and gas, transportation, banking and textiles, exporting, importing, manufacturing, real estate and philanthropy, among others.

At the end of the session it was obvious that there's a lot to teach African youth about entrepreneurship. It was obvious that the youth had learnt from Dangote at the Eko Hotel on Victoria island, Lagos, Nigeria.

Repeats of MTV Base Meets Aliko Dangote with MTN will be shown on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) tonight at 10pm and tomorrow at 6.30pm .
