NUM talks of more strikes

THE National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has threatened to ground Gold Fields' entire operations while the strike at the gold miner's South Deep unit in Westonaria entered its third day yesterday.

More than 3000 mineworkers were taking part in the strike and there was a "great possibility of a sweeping strike action" across all Gold Fields operations, the union warned.

"It is likely that we will ground the entire Gold Fields as the challenges relating to transformation cuts across the entire Gold Fields operations," Kenneth Buda, NUM's mining house coordinator at Gold Fields, said.

NUM said workers were in talks among themselves on whether to dig in their heels and bring Gold Fields to its knees.

The union said, the company made a few concessions but remained adamant that employment at higher levels was its prerogative and it does not want the union to be involved.

"NUM , on the other hand, is adamant that if transformation is to be realised the union would have to get involved since the company has failed to transform itself over more than 16 years," it said. - I-Net Bridge
