KZN funeral insurance fraud syndicate bust

AN Isipingo Home Affairs official was arrested on Friday for allegedly participating in an insurance fraud scam, say KwaZulu- Natal police.

The 29-year-old is the sixth person believed to be involved in a syndicate that cashes in people's funeral policies, says Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

The syndicate allegedly uses living people's identity documents to register them as deceased with Home Affairs.

One man, who's funeral policy was with Momentum Insurance, was defrauded of R50000.

The police arrested the first alleged syndicate member, Jackson Zungu, on December 12 in Pinetown.

John Mhlangu from Stanger was arrested shortly afterwards.

Mhlangu allegedly passed on the victim's particulars to Zungu.

On December 13, Sibongiseni Thabethe and Mbongeni Majola were arrested in Durban.

Thabethe was arrested for a similar crime in October last year and released on bail. - Sapa

The Hawks have seized dagga worth over R750000 in two raids on houses in the North West, police say.

Captain Pelonomi Makau says in the first incident dagga worth about R470700 was seized at a house in Orkney.

The raid came after police received a tip-off.

Makau says the house owner, a 30-year-old Lesotho national, was arrested.

Two other men suspected of being his customers fled the scene after shooting at police.

"The man, a Lesotho national, is believed to be the mastermind behind the sale of dagga in the area.

"It is alleged that the premises are used as a dagga storage area," says Makau.

The man appeared in the Orkney Magistrates' Court, where he was released on bail of R500000.

He is expected to appear in court again on Thursday when he will face charges of possession and dealing in dagga.
