Komphela: I’m a man of positive energy

Steve Komphela has suffered two cup final losses as Kaizer Chiefs head coach and now they are out of the Nedbank Cup, but he insists he remains positive.

To make matters worse, Chiefs are 13 points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on the Absa Premiership log with nine games to go.

And they look set to finish the season empty-handed.

Komphela, who was unveiled as Chiefs’ new coach in June after Stuart Baxter’s departure, says he is ready to fight on.

“I’m a man of positive energy. In the midst of darkness, I look at the sky,” he said after Chiefs lost 2-0 to Orlando Pirates in round 32 of the Nedbank Cup over the weekend.

“At no stage there is anything negative in my life and that’s how I look at life – that has taken me very far. I’m not going to look at the negatives, just to own up and this job comes along with pressure. We just have to deal with it and manage it… We are accountable to the supporters and honestly as we speak, they are not happy that we gave away a match [against Pirates] irrespective of the circumstances,” Komphela stated.

“So how are you going to treat it; you go out there and look at the positives. Look on the positive side and try to get better. You can’t be bitter because things didn’t go your way, but you need to find a way to say how do I stand? It is at this hour that the real characters are revealed and that’s the name of the game,” Komphela concluded.

As mentioned earlier, the Glamour Boys have lost their shine this season with two cup final defeats.

Chiefs were beaten 1-0 by Ajax Cape Town in the MTN8 final in September and in December; they lost 3-1 to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Telkom Knockout final.
