Early to talk relegation - Jomo Sono

Jomo Sono says he finds it very strange that some people already associate his club Jomo Cosmos with relegation when there are 16 Absa Premiership league matches still to play this season.

"Obviously, our current position is worrying but why jump the gun and talk relegation?" asked Sono, whose club has played 14 matches and is in 14th place on the 16-team table. He was reacting after Cosmos' 2-1 loss to Ajax Cape Town at Olen Park in Potchefstroom on Sunday.

"We cry, wipe tears and look into the future," he reasoned.

"Just because Cosmos suffered its eighth loss does not automatically warrant that I throw my hands in the air and say that's it. Look at what Maritzburg United did to Orlando Pirates over the weekend [held them to a 3-3 draw].

"It goes to show you that every team in the PSL is worthy of being there. Where is Maritzburg United on the table? At the bottom. And where is Pirates? At number 11."

If the current state of affairs involving the bottom six on the table is anything to go by, then the going is indeed not only tough for the bottom three - Cosmos, Tuks and Maritzburg United - but also for Polokwane City, Ajax and Pirates who are above Cosmos.

"It will take only two wins to change the misconception regarding Cosmos," said Sono, whose team has 10 points, five behind City and six behind Ajax and Pirates, who are eleventh on 16 points.

Sono conceded his men deserved to lose to the Urban Warriors on Sunday.

"We should have wrapped it up in the first half but we gave them a second lifeline and we paid the price," he said.

Ajax coach Roger de Sa sang the praises of Cosmos goalkeeper Sherwyn Naicker, who made a handful of brilliant saves.

"He kept Cosmos in the game," said De Sa.
