Former Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo’s future looks uncertain

The future of former Bafana Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo remains in the air with his representatives admitting that just about all options remain open.

Khumalo will be a free agent at the end of this month when his four-year contract with English Premier League Tottenham Hotspur comes to an end.

He never played a competitive fixture for the White Hart Lane side‚ but did have a number of successful loan spells in the lower leagues in England and the top-flight in Greece.

He has been linked to a number of teams in England‚ and appears to have turned down the opportunity to stay at Colchester United‚ his last club.

There has also been a suggestion that he could return to the Premier Soccer League‚ something Times Media understands would not be his first choice.

His intermediary‚ Glyn Binkin‚ says there are a number of options on the table‚ without revealing which clubs are interested.

“At this stage‚ we are still assessing a variety of options for him‚” Binkin said.

Khumalo has said previously that he wants to remain in England‚ preferably with a Championship club.

“I enjoy English football‚ I love playing in this country‚ I want to continue playing here‚ doing well and hopefully be part of a team that wins promotion to the Premier League and even play in the Premier League one day‚” he said.

“That’s first prize‚ to play at the highest level. The reason why I came here is because I want to play in the Premier League.

“Things have happened the way they have and I need to work my way to get up there and to go through whatever steps necessary to get there.”

He has played in the Championship before on loan at Reading and Doncaster Rovers. He battled at the latter‚ but was a key part of the former’s line-up in the 2013-14 season.
