Bafana stars warm bench in Holland

SETBACK: Thulani Serero
SETBACK: Thulani Serero

SOUTH Africa's Dutch-based youngsters Thulani Serero and Kamohelo Mokotjo both sat on the bench this weekend.

Serero is back at Ajax Amsterdam after national team duty with Bafana Bafana and was an unused substitute in their surprise 1-1 home draw with Roda JC.

Having not played for Ajax since injuring his groin in September, Serero will likely have to slowly work his way back into the first team. He was also used sparingly during the Nations Cup over concerns with his fitness.

The 22-year-old has scored three goals in four games for Ajax this season after a fast start to the campaign, though, and with games in the Uefa Europa League and Dutch Cup coming up this month, will hope for some action soon.

The situation is quite different for Mokotjo, who continues to be frustrated at Feyenoord.

It is clear coach Ronald Koeman does not rate the player, but he has been unable to win a move away from the club.

Former Bafana skipper Steven Pienaar played for Everton in their 2-0 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

"Schillo" was his usual busy self and once again among the better players on the pitch for the Toffees, but could not help his side get the win against the English champions-elect.

There was a professional debut for 18-year-old midfielder Phakase Mngadi at Belgian second division side Eupen on Sunday.

Finally, Masilo Modubi has returned to fitness for his Belgian second-tier side, Dessel Sport.
