Phiri holds Youth Day tournament

FORMER Bafana Bafana midfielder Maimane Phiri will celebrate Youth Day on Saturday with the finals of his development soccer tournament.

The finals of the 2012 Prassa-Metrorail Maimane Alfred Phiri Games juniors category will be played at Number Three Square grounds in Alexandra on Saturday from 11am to 5pm.

"We will play the finals of four categories on Saturday, the Under-13, -15, -17 and -20," said Phiri, who is now a development coach.

In the Under-13 section, Mighty Heroes will play against Banakekeleni Orphanage Home. The Under-15 final will feature Real Madrid and Alex Juniors City. Pamo United and Moroka Lions meet in the Under-17 final, while the last final of the day will be between Gauteng FC and Baroka FC.

"Baroka FC are the only club outside Alexandra. The team from Limpopo are the defending champions in the Under-20 section," said tournament director Percy Ndaba.

Phiri said 32 clubs have registered for the senior tournament that starts on June 23.

The finals are scheduled for July 30 at Alexandra Stadium.

"The tournament is growing in leaps and bounds, it is good to see more graduates of this tournament plying their trade in the Premier Soccer League," said Phiri.
