Born-frees ‘excited’ to cast their maiden votes

While some young adults in Stellenbosch are doubtful that the 2016 local Government elections will bring about “much-needed change”‚ they remain eager to cast their first votes.

A student from Kayamandi in Stellenbosch returned home this week from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town to cast her vote for the first time.

Speaking to TMG Digital on Wednesday‚ the 21-year-old‚ who asked to remain anonymous‚ said that casting her vote “meant a lot” to her.

“I feel so excited. This vote means everything to me. My hope for this election is that the ANC (African National Congress) will again run the Western Cape‚” she said.

The management student added that there is still “much-needed change” in her community.

“I believe in my ANC‚ and I know they will make things right.

“The main issue here is housing. They will look after our needs and change our standard of living‚” she said.

Benjamin Evans‚ a 19-year-old engineering student at Stellenbosch University‚ switched his T-shirt for a Democratic Alliance (DA) T-shirt shortly after casting his vote.

“Voting for the first time was actually quite fun and exciting‚” he said.

Evans said that‚ while he hoped that the municipal elections would bring change‚ he was doubtful that the lives of most people will improve in the near future.

“I’m hoping‚ but I really don’t think it will bring much change‚” Evans said.

While most of the town’s voting stations were running smoothly‚ ANC members took issue with a DA vehicle blocking their campaign tables in Ward 15.

“So far everything is running smoothly‚ but I have received many complaints that a DA vehicle is blocking the way of ANC members. We are trying to deal with it now‚” councillor Nokuthula Gugushe said.
