It was wrong to discharge pepper spray in Parliament – Modise says

Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces Thandi Modise acknowledged on Thursday evening that it was wrong to discharge pepper spray in Parliament during the State of the Nation Address and that the incident would be investigated by Parliament.

Several MPs claimed that tear gas had been fired in the chamber after proceedings erupted in chaos‚ with EFF MPs trading blows with parliamentary security personnel as they were forcibly removed from Parliament after delaying President Jacob Zuma’s address for more than an hour with constant interruptions.

However‚ Modise said it had been established that it was in fact pepper spray that had been discharged.

“But whatever it was‚ it should not have happened‚” she said‚ apologising for the incident.
