The African National Congress (ANC) on Monday slammed the call to arms issued by its Youth League president Collen Maine as “unfortunate‚ irresponsible and reckless”.

ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa said the “inflammatory remarks …should never be allowed to find space in our democratic society”‚ and ordered Maine to retract his comments.

At the “Hands off Zuma” march last week‚ Maine said: “Comrades from UmKhonto we Sizwe‚ bring your guns‚ now is the time to defend the revolution. We must do it. Generations that came before did it. They sacrificed their lives.”

Kodwa said the “current challenges facing South Africa require reasoned‚ cogent and decisive leadership‚ not provocative and demagogic talk”.

“Accordingly‚ the ANC has instructed the ANC Youth League president to retract these comments.”

The Congress of the People on Sunday opened a criminal complaint against him on Sunday‚ saying his utterances contravene section (16) (2) (b) of the Constitution which “excludes from the right of freedom of expression‚ incitement of imminent violence”.
