Solly Msimanga‚ Tshwane’s new executive mayor‚ is corrupt and a brazen liar‚ the ANC in the city has insisted.

The ANC in Tshwane on Thursday accused the city’s DA executive mayor‚ Solly Msimanga‚ of being corrupt and a brazen liar‚ accusations he wasted little time in rubbishing as an attempt to discredit his clampdown on corruption.

Speaking at a press briefing‚ the chairperson of the ANC in Tshwane and former mayor‚ Kgosientso Ramokgopa‚ read a statement in which the party details cases of alleged wrongdoing by Msimanga.

Msimanga became mayor following the recent local government elections. His party‚ the DA‚ entered into coalition with opposition parties to unseat the ANC.

Not only had Msimanga lied to the public‚ he had also irregularly appointed DA members to positions in the metro‚ said the ANC.

“One of the first public pronouncement issued by the executive mayor Msimanga upon his election was the banning of blue lights [motorcades]‚” said Ramokgopa.

“This exposed a glaring shortcoming of the mayor on the operations‚ powers and functions of the municipal council‚ since neither the executive mayor‚ nor a decision of the municipal council can give effect to such a decision as it falls within the competency of the provincial government to regulate such such matters.”

Ramokgopa said Msimanga had also lied by saying he would replace the BMW fleet used by former executives with cheaper cars.

“Mayor Msimanga failed to acknowledge that the BMW used by former executive mayor was in fact donated by BMW South Africa at no cost to the city or taxpayer for the duration of [my] term‚” said Ramokgopa.

He also tackled Msimanga on apparently backtracking on his initial executive mayoral committee. The DA faced criticism after it emerged that this 10-member team had only four black people.

Msimanga apparently announced a new executive team following criticism. “In a brazen lie‚ an official statement from the office of the executive mayor‚ the earlier appointments were denied‚” said Ramokgopa.

“The convening of the mayoral committee on Tuesday 23 August 2016 and the subsequent denial of such appointment is testimony to a blatant lie of the executive mayor‚” Ramokgopa said.

But Matthew Gerstner‚ Msimanga’s acting spokesman‚ denied that his boss lied to the public about anything and that he appointed DA members irregularly.

Gerstner said the appointments the ANC were complaining about were political positions and that Msimanga had banned only the metro’s officials from using blue lights.

“The ANC will try everything to discredit the new mayor‚ who is clamping down on corruption and turning the City of Tshwane around‚” said Gerstner.

“Instead‚ the ANC should concentrate of bringing order and discipline to their own caucus. They should accept the results of the election‚ where they have been voted out.”
