A public service employee who faked his school marks to get a job as a data typist with the South African Police Service was sentenced to a fine of R6000 or 24 months imprisonment.

Thapelo Samson Shongwe‚ 44‚ was employed as a typist at the Douglas Police Station in the Northern Cape in March 2004.

Hawks spokesman Captain Philani Nkwalase said on Thursday that the minimum requirements for the position was grade 10.

“Shongwe submitted a statement of symbols on his application‚ indicating that he wrote matric examination in November 2003 and that he passed his Grade 10 in 1989 at Batlhaping High School. Hawks Investigations revealed that Shongwe did not meet the minimum requirements for the post he occupied‚” he said.

He was arrested in October 2015 for submitting a fraudulent document to gain employment in the police and pleaded guilty earlier this week in the Douglas Magistrates’ Court.

In addition to his sentence‚ the court imposed 24 months imprisonment on him‚ suspended for five years on condition that he is not found guilty on similar offences. — TMG Digital
