The new speaker of the City of Johannesburg metro is DA's Vasco Da Gama.
The Democratic Alliance has taken the first step in dethroning the African National Congress in the City of Johannesburg. The DA’s nominee for the position of speaker‚ Vasco da Gama‚ on Monday won against the ANC’s Constance Bapela.
Bapela previously held the position of speaker of the metro and will now vacate the seat and hand over reigns to Da Gama who will resume his position with immediate effect.
A total of 271 votes were casted which saw Da Gama come on top with 145 votes while the ANC's Bapela only getting 126 of the votes.
The IEC said it noted the discrepancy of one additional vote but said that was not material enough to declare the election process unfair.
