The African National Congress’ (ANC) Tshwane mayoral candidate‚ Thoko Didiza‚ said she has been shown “a lot of love” by residents of the city and was confident the party will retain control of the capital city.

Speaking after casting her ballot at a voting station in Mooikloof in the east of Pretoria‚ Didiza said the ANC had ran a strong campaign in Tshwane and she had been warmly received by the ANC supporters in the country’s biggest metropolitan municipality.

“I was warmly received. Actually‚ (I was shown) a lot of love‚ which shows that whoever did that mischief was (expressing) and individual view and being mischievous to say the least‚” said Didiza.

“I think we’re going to defend the city‚ we are going to retain it. The efforts that we have done with the ANC‚ working with communities…I mean‚ I never sat in the office ever since (I was nominated) and I think it will bear fruit.”

Townships surrounding Pretoria‚ such as Atteridgeville‚ Mamelodi and Soshanguve‚ were plagued by violent and deadly protests in the middle of June after the ANC announced that incumbent Mayor Kgosientsho Ramokgopa would be replaced by Didiza.

Disgruntled ANC supporters argued at the time that Didiza was not one of their own because she had not been born or raised in Pretoria.

But Didiza now says that’s all in the past and she is looking forward to donning the mayoral chain as she’s confident that the ANC will retain Tshwane with an outright majority.

Several electoral polls have suggested that the capital city might‚ for the first time‚ be run by a coalition government as the ANC was facing strong competition from both the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters.

Didiza said that‚ at this point in time‚ they were not interested in discussing possible partnerships as they were focused on winning with a straight majority.

“I am confident that we will‚ let’s wait until the results are out‚ then we can talk‚” she said.

Didiza said she would spend the rest of Wednesday visiting various voting stations across Pretoria to encourage registered voters to turn out to cast their ballot‚ and to also try to win over undecided voters.
