The family of South African racing driver Gugu Zulu are devastated by his sudden death.
Zulu died on Monday morning while attempting to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro with his wife Letshego and other team members of Trek4Mandela for International Nelson Mandela Day.
Zulu’s uncle‚ Tsidiso Motloelwa‚ told Eyewitness News (EWN) that he received a phone call around 5am on Monday from his nephew’s mother informing him about his death.
“We are all devastated. We did not expect it to happen so quickly especially when talking about such a young life that was at its prime.”

He said the exact cause of death was still unclear.
“We have the sister (sic) who is now en route to Tanzania together with a representative from the Mandela Foundation‚ who are going there to get the finer details‚” he told EWN.
Motloelwa thanked the public for the messages of condolence‚ which he described as comforting.
Richard Mabaso‚ the founder of Imbumba‚ said the rest of the team was devastated by Zulu’s death.
Mabaso‚ who is also project leader for the expedition‚ said Zulu was beyond excited to start the climb.

“He was so excited. Before we left he said that he has a young daughter and he wanted to take action and create awareness.”
Mabaso was on the Trek4Mandela expedition that this year aimed to raise enough funds to ensure that 350‚000 girl children would not miss a day of school due to menstrual challenges.
He said Zulu had been complaining of flu-like symptoms for the past two days.
