Three to appear in court on Monday on human trafficking charges

Three suspects arrested by the Hawks during a bust of a human human trafficking ring during which 16 young girls were rescued will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the three suspects would face charges for human trafficking as well as for illegal possession of drugs.

The suspects were arrested at a house in Kempton Park in Ekurhuleni on the East Rand on Friday. Drugs and pornographic material were also seized in the raid.

The 16 girls found in the house were aged between 15 and 18. Some had apparently been kidnapped while others had been through a promise of employment.

According to reports‚ the girls told police they had endured sexual abuse at the hands of hundreds of men‚ being forced to sleep with over 15 men a day each‚ with clients paying between R50 and R70 a time.

Mulaudzi said on Sunday that the owner of the house had been contacted and it was hoped that he would hand himself over‚ or he would be pursued and arrested.

He added that the raid was part of an ongoing nationwide operation by the Hawks and other police divisions dubbed Operation Expose.

The operation was aimed mainly at rooting out drug trafficking‚ illegal firearms‚ other contraband and illegal immigrants‚ he said.
