Don’t give Oscar less than 15 years: Sanco

A harsh sentence meted out to “convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius will restore confidence of the public in the criminal justice system and finally deliver justice and closure for Reeva Steenkamp’s family”.

That’s the opinion of the South African National Civic Organisation ahead the start of the sentencing proceedings against the Paralympian in the Northern Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Monday.

“We are hopeful that Pistorius will not escape the minimum 15-year jail sentence for Steenkamp’s murder when he appears for sentencing after a protracted legal process that was strenuous for her family‚” said spokesperson Jabu Mahlangu.

Mahlangu said the earlier ruling by the Supreme Court of Appeal‚ which overturned his culpable homicide verdict‚ “had reaffirmed that South African courts can be trusted to dispense justice for victims of gender-based violence”.

“A stiff sentence for Pistorius will serve as a deterrent to perpetrators of gender-based violence and encourage men to seek professional help instead of resorting to violence to solve problems in their relationships‚” he said.

Pistorius shot and killed Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013.
