Voter’s roll for August 3 poll certified

The record 26.3-million registered voters are one more step closer to casting their votes for the local government elections following the certification of the voters’ roll.

The Electoral Commission of SA’s chief electoral officer‚ Mosotho Moepya‚ certified the roll on Thursday‚ ahead of the August 3 local elections.

In a statement the commission said the number of registered voters had increased by about 2.6-million‚ up from 23.6-million in 2011.

The IEC said the roll contains about 77% of all eligible citizens of voting age of which about 55% are women and 45% men.

Gauteng topped the list of the provinces with the highest number of voters bringing in 6.2-million voters‚ KwaZulu-Natal came in second with 5.4-million‚ the Eastern Cape with 3.3-million and the Western Cape with 3-million.

The Western Cape saw a 56.8% increase in voters since the 2000 local elections and KwaZulu-Natal had a 54.6% increase.

The lowest growth was in the Free State which only saw a 20% increase in voters since 2000.

The commission will publish the roll for inspection on Friday.
